Coming soon: Money from your Tumblr

On Thursday, we’re going to introduce ads on Tumblrs, so that later this year people can start making money from their blogs.

Tumblr is a place where brilliant, creative, funny, impossible people shape culture. Some of you have even turned your passions into jobs: book deals, music careers, paid gigs with the Creatrs program. Now, (soon!) that opportunity will be available to any eligible Tumblr—poet, musician, fan artist, and misfit weirdo memelord alike.

Some things you’re probably wondering:

Do you have to? Good question. No, you can turn off on-blog advertising in settings if you’re not comfortable with it.

When? Who? How? How much? Also good questions! We’re still working out the details of the partner program but as soon as we have details to share, we’ll make announcements right here on trusty Staff. Just so you know: You won’t be able to make money until you register for the program—which is coming soon.

Okay, cool. Ta ta for now!

Got questions? We’ve got some answers now, and we’ll have many more in the weeks to come. Here’s where we’re starting:

Where ads will appear:

For now, the three instances of your Tumblr blog:

  • Your main page (cheezbort.tumblr.com) if you’re using the Optica (default) theme
  • The slide-out thing on the web
  • The mobile apps and mobile web

How to turn off ads:

Go to settings on the web:

  • Go to your Tumblr’s settings
  • Flip the switch off for the appropriate Tumblrs

You’ll be able to do it from the mobile apps soon.

When you can start getting paid:

We’re still figuring out all the details of the partner program and working on the payment system. All we can say right now is we plan to launch a partner program sometime in 2016. It’s worth noting that you can’t make money until you register with the partner program—which is coming.

This is really happening:

It’s gonna be great.

Money, murder, and sadomasochism: A journey into the hidden world of the Los Angeles tech boom. August 29, 2015, is a hot night on Venice Beach. Normally the superheated inland desert sucks the damp air off the ocean, blanketing the coast with a layer of moisture all the way to the 405.

Brands are media + services

Brands are media + services

Postmodern industrialism is sort of different—you end up owning all these weird abstractions in the form of media and services, which you call “brands,” and the brands together form a kind of hidden network, and then you create ad products—which are software—inside them.

Maybe the way to see this whole thing is that…

“Maybe the way to see this whole thing is that VerizAolHoo is one of those giant old-school conglomerates, increasingly focused on reaching the small screen in your pocket, and getting you to give it money through that screen (it works—Verizon has a $230 billion market cap, which is definitely more cap than most of us). We’re not meant to understand what they are.”

Welp, it happened, Verizon bought Yahoo, and now we must live with the consequences — Track Changes (via deathbeard)
